Welcome to Food System Shock - Preparedness & Response
About Us and Our Mission
We are a research team from the Global Catastrophic Risks Institute (USA), Tennessee State University and Oxford (UK) that is concerned with answering the question, "How will we save as many lives as possible in the event that we lose a large portion of our food production due to a catastrophic global event?" The events that could lead up to this circumstance include a crop virus, comet impact, super-volcanic eruption or nuclear winter. These events, while unlikely in the next 5 years, deserve our attention and are the subject of too few research projects. We seek to answer this question by:
Our current focus is on shocks affecting 10% - 50% of global agricultural harvests, and encouraging response planning, preparedness work and initial assessments/research which may help to save many millions of lives, especially in developing countries.
